And youre right, theres been a lot of change sort of even preceding the sale of the paper to Platinum and the new management team thats been brought in has been pretty focused on moving the business forward so, yeah, weve got a lot going on. But theres probably more there than I would venture most people are reading every day. You know, those are the things that are very powerful in peoples minds and its really the job of everybody who traffics in honest information to help people look at the facts rather than these emotional issues, you know, that they want to believe which often, as in this case, are untrue and damaging. Were not trying to get in the breaking news business, were trying to get into the thoughtful news analysis where people have a chance across television, radio and the web to be well informed. With specific reference to rural development programmes, the rural community newspaper plays essential role in increasing the awareness of rural dwellers and convincing them to adopt recommended ideas, technologies, practices and strategies. News travels fast in a small town; bad news travels even faster, but all too often that news is no such thing. How can funders help sustain community-based and local journalism. LIGHT: So I think right now were at a point of rethinking those things and trying to put together organizations that will meet the public demand and the public responsibility that we have. And I know from KPBS standpoint, we work on this very much and we have three senior editors that review everything thats going out before it goes out. That goes to KPBS and their whatever they do about it. For those two weeks, alongside the headline news, we published stories on the opening of a new boat ramp, a golden wedding anniversary, the reopening of an old pub, the relocation of the butcher's, Christmas preparations, a hay bale blaze and the senior citizens' debutante ball. And, you know, or watch, you know, KPBS. BARBARA: Too many of them cant discuss it intelligently so weve dumbed down our whole society. NELSON: Advertising sales dollars up? But what you get over the course of your consumption of media, be it from one outlet or many outlets, is you get a steady improvement of the kinds of facts and detail that youre getting. And I do feel that our role is to serve the community, to serve San Diego. Were going to keep doing that. I think Ive heard that from all of you in one manner or another. The Union-Tribune has gone through some pretty major changes over the past decade. GREG DAWSON (News Director, NBC 7/39 TV): Good morning. It is a newspaper that primarily focuses on the coverage of issues, events and developments in a specific rural community. In a small town the local newspaper is not like the local hardware store. And it is neither flippant nor hyperbolic when I say that little country weekly newspaper is the only news organization on the planet Earth that gives the first tinkers damn about Sharkey and Issaquena counties, Mississippi. DAWSON: the technology, though, will drive a lot of that, I mean, you know. NELSON: Thats one of the problems with online. NELSON: Well, Im glad for the call, Hugh. So were all agreed that youre doing the right thing. Jeff Light from the Union-Tribune, with all of the cutbacks in your shop in particulareverybody has done it obviously but yours seems to be the at the Union-Tribune, the largest. Im glad that someone brought up the Duke Cunningham story for which I think the previous San Diego Union received some journalism award. Sincerity, truthfulness and accuracy: Good faith of the readers can be obtained through sincerity, truthfulness and accuracy which is the foundation of journalism. Hes just incredible. And for us, as a nonprofit organization, weve actually been growing. Many in Corporate India also prefer to view such developments as milestones in India's growth story. We need to take a short break and when we return, well continue talking about how the delivery of news is changing and what it means to San Diego. And I think what its forced all of us to do is refocus and reprioritize what we do. Tom Karlo, you want to talk about the dumbing down of our society if, in fact, thats the case? Even though this is a global trend, it is steadily trending in developing societies. "Much of our community life revolves around the local school. NELSON: Really? KARLO: And that shipping department is television, radio, digital media and all the social media type sites. Agriculture, including food, fiber, fuel and other bio-based products, has been an important economic and social driver in rural communities. Some put a lot of thought into their articles. You are consuming a media in the right way. KARLO: ..the populous make, you know, informed and educated decisions. KARLO: Well, Dean, over the last couple of years weve seen dramatic change in the media landscape, KARLO: both locally, nationally and internationally. Where we used to be able to run around and get all that, we cant anymore. DAWSON: You know, and that I think thats what were spending our time on right now. The community newspaper is not some monolithic entity; its editor is not some ivory towered big shot. He or she is also a neighbor. Thats why I think what, you know, what Voice of San Diego is doing in a particular way, those are important things for our communities. My contention is, is that there are a section of local government that is pretty much a shadow government and with very little oversight and I dont know who to go to. And thats what our role is. Theyre like theyre just false, and nobody calls them on it. In a small town the local newspaper is not like the local hardware store. There is impetus for us to reaffirm the importance of rural community to our interconnected society.
